Ellagic acid is a phytochemical, or plant chemical, found in raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, walnuts, pecans, pomegranates, and other plant foods.

Ellagic acid is usually made from red raspberries. This is the source of ellagic acid that has been tested as a cancer alternative. Ellagic acid may be helpful for breast, pancreas; esophageal, skin, colon and prostate cancers. Ellagic acid has also been said to reduce heart disease, birth defects, liver problems, and to promote wound healing. There are no results from human studies to support these claims at this time.

How does ellagic acid work?

Ellagic acid can be purchased in the form of tablets of concentrated red raspberry seed flour extract.

Ellagic acid acts as a scavenger to “bind” cancer-causing chemicals, making them inactive.

Ellagic acid inhibits the ability of other chemicals to cause mutations in bacteria. In addition, ellagic acid from red raspberries prevents binding of carcinogens to DNA, and reduces the incidence of cancer in cultured human cells exposed to carcinogens.

Red berries provide ellagic acid , which may protect the body from smoke and pollution by inactivating carcinogens and inhibiting free-radical formation.

The recommended dose is two (2) to six (6) capsules daily.

Foods containing ellagic acid include cranberries, wild strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cloudberries, pomegranate fruit, walnuts, pecans and beefsteak fungus.

Ellagic Acid for Skin Care?

Using a topical application of the antioxidant ellagic acid, researchers at Hallym University in the Republic of Korea markedly prevented collagen destruction and inflammatory response – both major causes of wrinkles – in both human skin cells and the sensitive skin of hairless mice following continuing exposure to UV-B, the sun’s skin-damaging ultraviolet radioactive rays.

The researchers say the results of their studies demonstrate that ellagic acid works to prevent wrinkle formation and photo-aging caused by UV destruction of collagen and inflammatory response. (Source: Science Daily)
